Energy from biomass makes a significant contribution to the European energy system today. With the EU’s ambitious climate targets for 2030 and 2050, the use of sustainable bioenergy will also continue to be an important and necessary part of a future fully renewable energy system.
While it is clear that there are substantial supplies of sustainable biomass resources, the size of the future potential is, of course, uncertain. The potential depends on how energy markets develop, changes in land use and cultivation methods, as well as the regulatory landscape and the design of sustainability criteria.
This factsheet compiles results from studies estimating the total biomass potential that could be available for energy purposes within the EU (up to 2050). The studies present potential assessments at high, medium, and low levels. They indicate a total potential within EU borders ranging from about 130 Mtoe to just over twice that amount, where the lowest level roughly corresponds to today’s use within the EU. The most recent study shows that the medium- and low-level estimates are lower than previously assessed.
